Can any doctor prescribe Tracleer™ and does one get it at a doctor’s appointment or do you have to be hospitalized?
Tracleer™ is an FDA approved drug and as such can be prescribed by any licensed physician. However, prior to beginning therapy with Tracleer™, we strongly urge that a pulmonary hypertension expert evaluate patients. This medication should not be prescribed prior to direct measurement of pulmonary artery pressure and cardiac output by heart catheterization. Before starting Tracleer™, testing for pulmonary vasoreactivity by heart catheterization is also recommended. Unlike Flolan™, patients do not need to be hospitalized to start Tracleer™. Patients often begin therapy at home. An insurance approval form must be submitted in order to obtain a prescription for Tracleer™. Once insurance approval has been obtained, the drug can either be shipped directly to the patient or sent the prescribing physician’s office. Liver function blood tests need to be checked every month and the physician responsible for monitoring the tests should be clearly identified prior to beginning Tracleer™.
