Can any air-cooled transformer be used outdoors?
Not all air-cooled transformers are designed or manufactured for outdoor installations and should not be installed outdoors unless the Marelco Engineering Department specifically advises. The two main reasons for limitations on the installation of air-cooled transformers outdoors are moisture absorption in the windings and flashovers due to lightning. Outdoor use generally requires the equivalent of a NEMA 12 waterproof enclosure. Epoxy encapsulated NEMA 12 transformers are readily available to your specifications.
