Can anabolic steroids cause personality changes?
Anabolic and androgen steroids such as testosterone have receptors in the brain and may have manifest effects on behaviour. The sequela most consistently cited is aggressiveness, but acute affective and paranoid psychoses have also been reported, though in a strictly scientific sense causality has not been established. However, as the abuse of steroids spreads among the young, other risk factors such as abuse of alcohol and other drugs as well as psychological susceptibility may contribute to the risk of personality changes or of violent behaviour as a result of anabolic steroid abuse.
