Can an online database of e-books replace traditional libraries?
I do not think that e-books will replace traditional libraries. When one thinks about it, the traditional library is incredibly environmentally friendly and it’s free. People borrow books and bring them back for others to borrow rather than just buying books for themselves. The best thing to happen as far as publishing goes over the past few years is this idea of on demand publishing. On demand publishing basically means that books are printed not in mass quanties but on a per request basis. This is extremely environmental friendly and cost effective, so hopefully it will take off. As far as libraries being replaced by ebooks, take a look at the following clip from NBC Nightly News. The biggest threat to libraries is not e-books, it is budget cuts.
