Can an event be both a criminal and civil offense?
Yes. Depending on the circumstances, a single event may be tried in both courts. This is not considered double jeopardy. Even if you settle the issue of damages with the other person involved, you’ll still have to answer to the criminal charges. The fact that you accepted financial responsibility will be a factor the judge will consider in imposing punishment, but it won’t affect the issue of guilt to the criminal charge.
