On the face of it, it may seem a bit unfair, but yes they can. He will have started under different terms of employment to the others. Some firms have scrapped the final-pay related pension scheme, although those on it will continue the old scheme, new employees doing the same job will get a fixed, lower rate pension. Think of it this way. On £10 an hour, one will get £15 an hour, whilst he will get £13,30, a difference of only £1,70. And tax will shorten the difference even more. He would have to work about 20 hours overtime a week to make even £30 difference. And any overtime is better than no overtime. He doesn’t have to do it, presumably He has had the redundancy money which the others haven’t. And any job is better than no job nowadays.
