Can an employer make you work an a day you have already booked off?
Don’t know about the UK, but in the US, there’s not much you can do. Usually, days requested off are granted (provided that you have some vacation time or work in a service industry where hours are variable), because they know that if you are forced to work when you do not want to, your work quality will be low. However, if it’s just a day or two, we often call in sick. Because no employer wants an employee to work while ill…. except maybe Walmart. When I was working there, I sprained my ankle and had to take a few days off to lay in bed and recover. They asked me if there was a special boot or something I could wear and work anyway. Back to your question: If UK employers are anything like (most) US employers, they won’t make you work on days requested off.
