Can an economy 7 pre-payment meter charge a single rate tariff?
An ‘economy 7’ pre-payment meter will have two tariff settings… the exact time of day when you get ‘cheap’ rate varies (see link) however you should get 7 hours (out of 24) at the cheap rate. Pre-payment meters are normally installed to force users to pay off their debts (sometimes they are installed by Landlords to prevent their tenants running up massive bills they can’t afford to pay) = so the tariff setting will be set to a ‘higher’ level than the actual cost … and plainly who-ever sets the meter can set both tariffs to the same higher level … If debts have to be paid off, any extra you pay over and above the ‘normal’ tariff will go to pay off the debts when the meter is ‘read’ .. If there’s no outstanding debts then the meter should be set to the Utility companies ‘standard’ pre-pay rates, for ‘economy 7’ or whatever (most Utility Co’s charge higher rates for pre-pay meters V’s standard billing).
