It is possible potentially to weld aluminium to stainless steel. While it is always best to match aluminium to aluminium and steel with steel, it is possible to weld steel to aluminium if desired. Steel and aluminium have very different properties. There are a large number of fabricators that manufacture stainless steel piping systems and carbon- and the procedure for welding them and manufacturing them are fairly well known. The material differences between aluminium and steel make the fabrication practices for them totally different. Steel pipes are usually welded by using an open root joint geometry. Sometimes tungsten arc welding, short circuit mode, shielded metal welding and gas metal arc welding are used to weld the root pass. Nickel piping and steel piping usually require an internal backpurge and usually need a machine weld preparation.
