Migraine attacks are characterised by intense, localised pain, usually on one side of the head. Attacks can last from anywhere between two hours and several days, and can be so severe that they incapacitate the sufferer. Some migraines come without warning, but others may be proceeded by other symptoms such as flashing lights, blurred vision or numbness on one side of the body. There is good scientific evidence to suggest that a major cause of migraine is food sensitivity. Certain foods are well known to trigger migraine. Sometimes referred to as ‘the five Cs’, these are; chocolate, cheese, claret (and other red wines), coffee (and other sources of caffeine) and citrus fruits. Other foods that, in practice, appear to be common triggers include milk, wheat and artificial additives and sweeteners. In practice, I find wheat to be a particular problem.
