Can allergy be predicted?
At present, no good mechanism exists to accurately predict a child’s chances of developing allergies. Although children are at higher risk if one or both parents have allergies, there currently is no adequate, standardized, validated way of identifying all infants who are at risk (by family history). Furthermore, 1 in 3 infants is born to a family with a history of allergy. To top it off, approximately half of children who go on to develop allergies have no known family history of allergy.
