CAN ALIMONY BE PAID IN ONE LUMP SUM INSTEAD OF SPREAD OUT OVER TIME?
Yes. Alimony is usually paid on a regular schedule out of the income of the paying spouse. However, if both parties desire, and the paying spouse has the financial ability, they can certainly arrange to have alimony paid in one lump sum. Remember, almost anything is possible if you and your spouse agree to it. One advantage of getting a lump sum would be psychological; both of you would be able to get on with your lives as individuals without ties to your past. Another advantage would be the fact that you would have all of your money to spend or invest as you wish and you would not have to rely upon someone sending you a check every week or every two weeks or every month.
