it is not that adding AgCl can distinguish between AgNO3 and Zn(NO3)2 it’s making AgCl, that can distinguish between AgNO3 and Zn(NO3)2 by adding a drop of HCl or NaCl solution will make a white cloudy precipitate in whichever is AgNO3 it will do nothing when added to the Zn(NO3)2
