Can AEDs be used to treat children?
While VF is relatively uncommon in children, it does occur in 5-15% of pediatric SCA cases. In these cases, rapid defibrillation can improve outcomes. For children ages 1-8, a pediatric dose of electrical therapy should be used if possible. Some AEDs adjust the dosage through pediatric dose-attentuator systems; others use different methods to adjust to a pediatric dose. If a child is in VF and a device with pediatric capabilities is not available, a standard AED should be used. Scientific evidence is insufficient to recommend for or against use of AEDs in children under age one.
