Can Adjustments to Working Hours Help Reduce Unemployment if Firms Act Globally?
) (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen – * Faculty of Economic Sciences – Chair of International and Monetary Economics) Abstract The article discusses, on the one hand, several reasons which question the positive impact of a reduction in working hours, even without an offsetting upward adjustment in wage rates, upon employment in an open economy with firms acting globally. On the other hand, all effects will turn round resulting in a positive impact upon the unemployment rate if working hours are voluntarily extended. The discussion is followed by a theoretical analysis using an efficiency wage model in a small open economy.
