Can abortion cause adhesions of the intestines?
An uncomplicated abortion would not typically cause adhesions of the intestines. Adhesions are composed of scar tissue that forms within the abdominal cavity in response to injury or inflammation. Adhesions usually cause no problems, but they can tether the internal organs and disrupt function. For example, extensive adhesions of the intestine can cause a blockage. During an abortion the uterine contents are removed through the vaginal canal and the abdominal cavity is undisturbed. However, if there is a complication such as perforation of the uterus or pelvic infection, adhesions affecting the intestines may occur.
