Can a torn ribcage muscle cause back pain?

I recently torn or pulled my ribcage muscle while playing football. I felt something rip after I twisted weird while being tackled. I went to the doctor the next day and the xray was negative. Today is Day 5 after the injury and for the last two days I have been experiencing pain in my back directly in line with the rib pain in the front. I want to know if it is normal for back pain to be associated with a rib injury.
