There are a couple of good answers here, but it also depends on the location of the tooth. Most often you would need a crown on a tooth with a root canal, but I have seen people with their lower front teeth do well without a crown (those are hard teeth to crown) you still have to be careful as the tooth will become brittle without the nerve/blood source. What you want to avoid is food/bacteria impaction into the “hole” that the filling material was protecting. I would suggest returning to your dentist, they can usually squeeze you in, it only takes a minute and well worth your effort. And by all means, be careful with it!
