Can a special education teacher call for a meeting to review her students IEP?
Answer Dear Cheri, Either a school district or a parent can request a meeting at any time. IDEA 2004 along with No Child Left Behind have emphasized the need to hold meetings with a properly configured multidisciplinary team including the parent when students are not making adequate or meaningful progress, are not meeting IEP goals set out on the IEP, or for any other reason. The district or the parent can also request evaluation or assessment of the student’s needs. When I was in the school district, and currently in consulting with many school districts, it is my experience that there is a mechanism in your special education department by which parents are invited to the IEP meetings. Sometimes, it is administration or others a separate special education office from your Board of Education or in the same school. Define the purpose of the meeting, but right now, you could share information with which you are concerned as part of good home-school communication. I hope this helps; feel
