Can a solid or liquid exist that is lighter than air and floats?
iwnit Feb 4th, 2010 1) “Lighter than air liquids Q: Is there any liquid or material which is close to (or even lighter than) air? Is there theoretically any possibility of this? Answer 1: Well, if you take something like polystyrene or ‘bubble wrap’ and fill in the air bubbles with helium, it wouldn’t surprise me if the whole thing floated. Not sure about liquids though. Answer 2: I once heard that a solid which is lighter than air has been synthesized, called “Aerogel”, only it’s not ultra hard :-)” Source and further information: http://www.skytopia.com/project/science/physics.html#35 2) This solid is very light. It seems that it can have different densities, depending on the technology used: “SEAgel (Safe Emulsion Agar gel) is one of a class of high-tech foam materials known as aerogels. It is an excellent thermal insulator and among the least dense solids known. SEAgel was invented by Robert Morrison at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1992. SEAgel is made of agar, a c
