Can a solicitor charge me if I did not sign the retainer letter?
I assume you realise that solicitors have to make a living like everyone else. As soon as you sent then the contract to be reviewed you were expecting them to do some work for you, so you must have expected to pay for it. The fact that you pulled out before the job was over doesn’t mean that you are entitled to not pay for what was done. However, solicitors have a professional code of conduct which requires them to behave in an appropriate manner. The “client care” section is very detailed. Among other things, the solicitor is supposed to tell you what their charges are, what they have agreed to do, and what the estimated price will actually be. They are also supposed to tell you who at the firm will deal with any complaints. All of this should happen before any work is done. Ideally you will have this in writing up front, but it must be confirmed in writing in originally given verbally.
