Can a sidewalk or path be hung on the side or underneath the existing bridge?
No. These options were investigated by the department’s structural engineers during the development of the project. The engineers determined these options were not feasible. The main problem with these ideas was the ability for the bridge to handle the additional loading imposed by the new walkway. Additional concerns included the likelihood of damaging the reinforcing in the bridge by mounting the new hardware, and intrusion by the under bridge walkway into the vessel navigational area beneath the bridge.
