Can a PI request IGERT international funds to support some or all of a field research experience in a foreign country, and if so what exactly is it that the PI could request?
If the request is for trainee funding, the travel and subsistence would be included in the proposal for international funding for the IGERT and would be detailed in the table in the budget justification. As with any other IGERT, the international portion would have to be well integrated into the research and education proposed. It is expected that the IGERT trainees would be receiving their IGERT stipends during this experience so they would not receive further pay while away. Some funds could be budgeted for the PIs travel to monitor these experiences but these funds should be minimal since IGERT is a training grant. IGERT does not typically pay for research expenses for students working on faculty projects. Make sure to include any other expenses in the budget proposal such as related tuition or pre-travel training.
