Anemia is a common side affect of chemotherapy treatment. It affects 60% of patients undergoing chemotherapy, because although chemotherapy kills cancer cells, it also kills off healthy cells. Red blood cells and digestive tract cells are particularly affected because they are rapidly dividing cells. The ability of the digestive tract to absorb nutrients is compromised during treatment because digestive cells are being destroyed. Therefore, using a liquid iron like Floradix is an advantage, because the absorption is rapid. Chemotherapy also affects the ability of the bone marrow to produce new red blood cells. A review of 60 cancer studies found that anemic cancer patients had reduced survival times for various malignancies. It has yet to be established if treatment of anemia improves survival, but it suggests the need to correct anemia. Anemia is something that should be monitored by a physician.
