Can a person check my account balance when he/she transfers money to my bank account?

How are you transferring the money? If you are having the person do a wire transfer they will need your routing number and account number but won’t be able to see your balance. If you allowed them to go online they would need your password and user ID, to set up a transfer between their and your account claiming to be on both. This would require your social security number, two dummy deposits and about four days to set up. If they are taking a check, money order or cash into the bank to deposit to your account they would not see your balance. No one will give them the info on the phone or in person. If you are paranoid, have them give you the money and then you can go to the bank.

No, they should not be able to see the balance at all, unless they are on your account. There are laws put into place to prevent this and each financial institution has to adhere to it.

When I transfer money to my daughter’s account online (same bank even), I do not see any of her information or balance.

It depends on the transfer method. For a wire or ach transfer, like for payroll deposits or miscellaneous deposits, they should not be able to see your balance. For a more personal transfer, such as the type I do when I transfer funds into my daughter’s account, I can see her balance after I make the transfer. I have to use her password or ss# to do the transfer, however. As long as your transfer is done on the more impersonal level of a wire transfer or ach, they won’t be able to see anything. This of course begs the question: if it isn’t a payroll or expense account transfer, or a family member, are you sure you want to give someone your bank account number? Make sure you know who has this information, since there’s no safety net for you.
