Can a pattern for woven fabric be converted to knit fabric?

I would be very leary of using a knit fabric in place of a woven fabric in a pattern. These are very different materials and patterns are designed to be used with certain fabrics. If the pattern calls for a woven fabric, it means that the pattern was designed to not stretch. I’d be very careful and I’d get a professional opinion.
