Can a North American PS3 play Japanese DVDs (NTSC, Region 2)?
I am a Canadian who owns a North American PS3. I use said PS3 as a multimedia player, and as such, it is my DVD player of choice. I am an avid fan of animation, and there are two specific Studio Ghibli movies that I would love to own, but they are not available in North America. Those movies are Umi ga Kikoeru (Ocean Waves/I Can Hear The Sea) and Omohide Poro Poro (Only Yesterday). After much frustrated and futile searching for NTSC Region 1 DVDs of the movies, I stumbled upon the fact that, in Japan, there are legit DVD releases that have Japanese audio with optional English subtitles. This is perfect for me. The one problem is that, although the DVDs are NTSC, they are Region 2 encoded. My question, then, is whether or not my PS3, which plays NTSC Region 1 DVDs fine, can also play NTSC Region 2 DVDs. This is NOT a NTSC/PAL question.
