My father, uncle, maternal grandmother, and younger brother are all type II diabetics. I found Dr. VanArsdall’s e-mail address and have sent him a message regarding systemic causes. Dr. Boyd mentioned that it could be genetic, but I know of no one in my family that has this problem. Both my parents have gum disease, but it is due to hygiene. They have not seen a dentist in years. Dr. Boyd did not mention any other systemic disorders that would disturb bone metabolism. I know mercury poisoning has been mentioned as a cause of bone destruction.
