Can a landlord tell one tenant in the building to get rid of their dog?
My friend was told by her landlord that she has 30 days to get rid of her dog (We live in California). It is a dog friendly building and many other tenants have dogs. The landlord claims it is because there are tenants that are “afraid” of the dog. She is a Pit bull, and is the most gentle, well-trained, well-behaved dog I know. She has never attacked or even tried to bite anyone, and has never been in a fight with another dog. She is fixed and licensed by the city. There are no breed restrictions in the building and the landlord agreed to her having the dog before she moved in (though I am not sure what it says on the lease). She does have a year lease. What can she do? It is a very large building. What about starting a petition and having all the tenants sign it? Yes he can, but it’s not fair to stereotype a certain breed! That’s wrong. All the pit bulls I know are well behaved, sweet, gentle dogs. I would think this should be termed harassment. Good luck!
