Can a house pass code if a contractor puts new siding over asbestos siding?? ?
Actually code compliance isn’t the issue unless the house was vacant for a number of years and occupancy was discontinued, and you’re trying to regain a certificate of occupancy, then you start running into all kinds of fun compliance/code problems. Asbestos can be pretty nasty stuff. Even though the asbestos is on the exterior of the home (i.e. siding), the amount of air infiltrating through the wall assembly can contaminate the interior, especially if any of the siding is damage. In older homes, the air infiltration rate is pretty high. As a previous answer suggested, do contact your local building department, residential division and ask. Usually, you’ll get an answer the same day. Also, suggest talking to one of the residential building “inspectors” within the same department. Definitely suggest having the siding removed. Asbestos abatement procedures will probably have to be observed (EPA), just go to the EPA website and they should have documentation and instructions. Good luck!
