Can a Hockey helmet be used for skiing ?
It’s a better choice than a climbing helmet, but still not the best. The big difference is that ski helmets are designed primarily as a shock absorber for head-to-object impacts. Hockey helmets are primarily designed to deflect pucks and protect against vertical objects, such as the glass. While a hockey helmet will take the impact of the head to the ice, it doesn’t offer as much protection as a snowsports helmet. Additionally, a hockey helmet is usually not insulated so a hat or something underneath may be necessary to stay warm. This may affect how the helmet fits, thus making it even less of a good choice. Furthermore, a hockey helmet, in general, fits much looser than a ski helmet. Having seen many come off simply through normal play on the ice, suggests that in a high speed impact on skis, a hockey helmet very well come off, thus negating any protection at all.
