Can a given filter code be replaced by a similar one?

No. Every product code corresponds to a specific engine and vehicle model. Therefore, a given product code cannot be replaced by another, even if both filters look similar to each other at first glance. For example, two different oil filters may have similar body threads, so that the gasket may fit perfectly on its seat. But the by-pass valve opening pressure may be different. Said valve has a spring which is calibrated according to the working pressure of the oil pump. In normal operation this valve remains closed, causing the oil to flow entirely through the pores in the filter paper. When the filter paper becomes saturated because of oil aging, or during motor starting in cold conditions, the oil is not able to pass through the paper pores unless the safety valve is open, thus letting the oil reach friction points and effecting lubrication. If the spring tension is too high, the valve would not open when needed, then the engine would be left unlubricated and damage would result. On
