Can a foreign-national be accompanied by a spouse and children while working on an H2B visa?
It is not easy to leave your family behind when you go to any country to work for a period of time. For this reason, H2B workers are allowed to bring their spouse and underaged children with them on H4 non-working visas. However, this is almost never done. Most H2B visa holders find it difficult to pay the expenses associated with a non-working family traveling with them. Rent, food, school and transportation are usually much more expensive in the U.S. than in the H2B worker’s home country. The spouse and children are not allowed to work on H4 visas. There is also the cultural adjustments of the non-working family members to consider. If just a child comes, there is also the extra expense of child care. The U.S. Embassy will also be concerned that the worker will not be able to show intent to return to his/her country if his/her family is with them. If you wish to take this option, you, the H2B worker, must show other legitimate ties to your home country other than family (because they will not be waiting for you in your home country) and they must be strong ones.
