We first did a search for the state’s probate court using the state’s name and ‘probate court’, e.g., “Alabama Probate Court”. If the probate page for the state’s court system pops up as one of the top 10 links in the search engine’s results, we awarded an A for this category. If the state court’s probate page did not show up initially, we searched again using the state’s name and ‘courts’, e.g., “Alabama courts”. If the state’s main court page comes up and includes information about probate we gave it a C. If no information about probate is posted on the state’s main court page, or if the information is not easily found, we gave it an F. Does the Web site offer general info about settling an estate? Every jurisdiction was given an A, C, or F in this category. An A was awarded to Web sites that provide a complete and helpful description of when and why probate is required.
