Can a 50 year-old with high blood pressure use the Mirena?
I am 51 years old and my doctor just recommended the Mirena for me for birth control and heavy periods. I have been on Loestrin for years and 3 years ago I went on high blood pressure (HBP) medication for 1 year, lost weight and discontinued meds. Two years ago my period on Loestrin became very heavy. Currently my BP is 156/98 and cholesterol 250. In the Minena brochure it does not state anything about HBP (high blood pressure) but in the patient information paper that is folded up inside (under who should not use MIRENA) says “tell your health-care provider if you have high blood pressure. My mother had a stroke at 55 and I do not think there have been any clinical studies done on the Mirena using women over 40. Thank you.
