California Budget Crisis: What Does it Mean to Californians?

Due to recession, California doesn’t have enough money. Governor Schwarzenegger attempted to raise some extra funds by going deeper in debt and raising some taxes; however, the legislature and the voters were strongly opposed to this approach. As a result, the governor had no choice but to announce plans for numerous budget cuts. These budget cuts are the biggest and most significant in decades. The most significant impacts are: • Eliminating the welfare program for the poor • Eliminating health coverage for low-income children • Suspending all cash grants for college students • Shortening the school year • Reducing the number of teachers • Reducing funding for state parks • Reducing prison sentences Perhaps the only people happy about these cuts are the criminals who get out to the streets to commit new crimes a bit ea
