The file that got downloaded should have extension .xpi Probably you have clicked that link from a browser other than firefox. (e.g. IE, Opera etc.) Make sure you click that link from firefox only. Still if it asks you to save the file, allow it to save. After it is completely downloaded, drag it using your mouse & drop it onto a firefox window. Or a better option: double click on it. when it asks you to select default ‘open with’ program, choose firefox. & open it. Then restart firefox.
