The 12-string guitar has the same basic six strings as the standard 6-string, from which, pairs are formed. The two highest strings (treble) have matched pairs (often they are referred to as “drones”), while the remaining four lower strings have an accompanying, one-octave higher string as its mate. The result is a rich, full sound that’s very hard to replace on songs it gets used for. The downside is that it’s not only an extra guitar to carry around, but a bit more to maintain in terms of tuning (with all the thin, higher strings), as well as string breakage and changes.
