I know. England is just one of the components of Britain. The others are Wales and Scotland. The full name of the UK – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – includes Northern Ireland, which is located on another island.

As a Scots/Irish person, I am always amused when it comes to sporting events. If England do not qualify for a tournament, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland become ‘British’, however if England do qualify, they are referred to as English.
