Breaking a horse to ride…what do i need to do?
Hire a professional if you don’t have a lot of experience training. You can do SERIOUS damage to a horse by handling them improperly during the early stages of saddle training. I have had to fix quite a few horses with very serious and dangerous behavioral issues after their owners tried to ‘break’ them by themselves and did not know how to do it properly. It takes a whole lot more time and money to pay someone to fix your horse after you’ve messed them up than it does to have someone train them properly in the first place. Training a horse is NOT something you can pick up from tips, a book, or really even a video. It’s all about timing, correct amounts of pressure, knowing when the horse is ready to progress to the next step, technique, and developing a positive relationship. It’s something you learn with a lot (and I do mean a lot) of experience and a lot of hands-on time with a professional.
