BMP is definitely an older standard but it is still in use today for a few reasons. 1) It is recognized by most file systems 2) Everyone has a viewer to view bmps 3) BMPs are larger because they are uncompressed…typically with most compressed image formats you are losing image quality for a smaller file size 4) The BMP extension is free of patents so it can be used anywhere 5) It is a very simple and well documented format Wikipedia has a pretty good article on BMPs: http://en.wikipedia.
