Hummm, I guess you have never had a small pet reptile (too small to easily eat mice or other non-insect food), or if you have, they were probably VERY calcium deficient. Reptiles that live on a diet of only insects need them to be dusted with a “mineral sand” to provide Calcium, etc. for the reptile’s own bones and general health. http://www.reptilesupply.com/product.php… is an ad for such a product. You’ll notice that several of its ingredients are what might be found in “dirt.” Those that eat rodents, etc. are able to absorb these minerals from their prey, so their need is not as acute, though you will see then ingest small amounts of sand from the floor of their enclosure, apparently to aid digestion of their food.
