Best time to go snorkeling in Oahu?
The winter storm waves hit the coast on North Shore, while the Honolulu side is much much calmer. But more important, Hanauma Bay is a totally protected coral lagoon in a sunken caldera with only one side open to the ocean anyway so always pretty calm. I frequently have seen puffer fish, parrot fish, moray eels and sea turtles. The water WILL be cooler this time of year though, but only when you first get in, then you won’t notice it. Make sure to slather your body with water-proof sun block before you go in the water, as the coolness blocks how much sunburn you feel…until later!!!!!! The sun will warm and dry you here in the tropics in a few minutes when you exit the water. It is very important for you to arrive as early in the morning as possible, when the park opens.
