Schools continue to be required to provide additional services to students. Many of these services are inefficiently provided when school enrollment is small. For example, the additional cost of scheduling physical education and music is around $250,000 due to travel between buildings during the day and other lost time in schedules. As another example, nursing is part-time in many buildings as full-time nurses are not economical in small schools. Yet most nursing services are needed around the lunch hour to give medications to students. The small schools do not permit every school to have a nurse at these times, so the Administrator or another staff member must give out medications. When an injury occurs that requires more than a bandage, and a nurse is not present, little expertise is available to handle the medical needs of the student.
