Trees quite literally form the foundations of many natural ecosystems and help to: conserve soil and water resources prevent desertification stabilize degraded lands restore wildlife habitat improve air and water quality enhance recreation areas Trees also play a vital role in the daily life of rural communities. They provide sources of timber, fuel wood, food, fodder, medicines and shade. Lastly, many trees have communal benefits, especially for the poor, and ownership, access and use rights are as important as the number of trees.
