Some types of biopsy are more reliable than others. If they are taking needle biopsies then it is possible they missed the mass or did not get enough tissue from the area best suited for a diagnostic pathology report. If the physician (oncologist?) sees that the mass is growing on successive CT scans then his previous experience and learning is probably indicating to him that most likely your father has a lung cancer. Lung cancer is very common but benign lung tumors that act like the mass in your father may be very rare or non-existent. If your father is on Medicare then medicare is often slow to pay for PET scans. The PET scan will tell you whether or not the mass is cancerous if the cancer is bigger than 1/2 centimeter so you should have a clear answer soon.
