Bengali words ending with a khanda ta do not get displayed properly in some applications. Why?
This is a known problem in Microsoft Word and Outlook. This happens because before the introduction of the standalone khanda ta symbol in the Unicode Standard 5.1 specification, the recommended way to represent the khanda ta was by using a Zero Width Joiner character (ZWJ) after the hasanta form . Microsoft ILIT retains this old representation for backward compatibility. However, Microsoft Word appears to ignore a ZWJ at the end of a word and render the word with the hasanta form, ত্. For example, when you type “satyajit”, the default option is and this is displayed correctly in the options list. But once the option is selected, either by clicking on it or by typing a space, it gets inserted into Microsoft Word as “সত্যজিত্”. The same behavior can also be observed using the Bengali visual keyboard. Notice that if any other Bengali text is added to this word, the khanda ta is automatically rendered correctly.
