BEng or MEng?

Chemical Engineering degree courses are offered at two levels: • The 3 year BEng degree gives graduates a sound education in core Chemical Engineering subjects and a skills base that employers demand. • The 4 year MEng degree enables students to become an expert in Chemical Engineering science with a greater depth and breadth of knowledge and understanding. Both degrees are a sound basis for a career in the Chemical Engineering industry and most universities offer a choice of BEng and MEng programmes. Both courses provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Chemical Engineer, which is considered a benchmark within the profession. Applicants who have completed a MEng accredited degree will only need appropriate work experience to satisfy the entry requirements for Chartership. Those offering a BEng accredited degree will need to undertake a period of additional study as well as the appropriate work experience. Before making their choice students are advised to check that their course is a

Our BEng degrees are three year degrees which provide the foundation for a career in engineering but do not meet the full educational requirements for becoming a chartered civil engineer (see “Can I still get chartered if I get a BEng degree?” below). The four year MEng is the most obvious direct route to becoming a chartered engineer but we recognise that some people will want to use their three year degree to move in different career direction or may wish to carry out their educational fourth year in a specialist subject or at a later stage. Irrespective of whether you’ve chosen BEng or MEng, the first two years of study will contain the same material. To be allowed to reach the third year of the MEng course we require that students have reached a certain benchmark level (currently a 2:2 grade or above) we may thus ask for slightly higher grades to join the MEng course.

The BEng is a three-year course that will provide you with a sound engineering knowledge base and an excellent grasp of engineering science principles. It will educate you to apply your knowledge and understanding to the solution of real engineering problems, and to communicate your ideas to others.
