Before disconnecting a utility service, what notices must be given to the customer?

0

The type of notice given to the customer depends on the type of utility: Water – Disconnections of municipal water utilities are governed under Code Section 384.84(2c.). Notice must be sent to the customer prior to disconnection which allows the customer the chance for a hearing. If the customer is a tenant, notice must also be given to the landlord if the landlord has made a written request for the notice. Gas/Electric – Many different rules must be considered before disconnecting gas or electric. A 12-day notice must be given before attempting personal contact, and 24 or 48 hours notice depending on the success of the personal contact with the customer. Utilities are also required to contact a landlord, if known, if personal contact with the tenant fails. Municipal gas and electric utilities are advised to contact the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) to discuss what other requirements may exist.
