Infertility related to an STI is caused by the growth of scar tissue in the reproductive system. For females, the infection would cause scar tissue inside the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, which could prevent implantation of the fertilized egg in the wall of the uterus. Infection also causes damage to the fallopian tubes, making it hard for the egg to travel through the tube. For males, the infection would cause scar tissue in the vas deferens and the urethra, which would lower the number of sperm able to leave his body. This happens at a different rate for each person. Someone could have damage in a short time, for others it may take over a year.
